Quantifying carbon footprint for ecological river restoration

چکیده

Abstract RIVER restoration is a popular technique to rehabilitate degraded river habitat. Given the nature of these types engineering projects, using ecological indicators monitor effectiveness has been traditional approach. However, as this approach emphasizes post-project performance, environmental impact attributed project’s construction phase received little attention directly or indirectly. This study quantified carbon footprint restoration, project in California case study. A topographic diversity index (TDI) was developed functional unit project, indicating how can increase variation habitat topography. The results show that lead greenhouse gas emissions ranging from 288 336 kg CO 2 equivalent (kg e) for every 1% TDI improvement, 9–14 e per meter stream restored. identified improving raw material acquisition plans and heavy-duty equipment rental decision be feasible strategies leading reduction footprint.

River restoration: seeking ecological standards. Editor’s introduction

1. In the face of continuing anthropogenic stressors to freshwater systems worldwide , the natural resilience and resistance of the freshwater ecosystems that enables them to cope with or recover rapidly from certain levels of perturbation is under significant threat. In many systems, the changes brought about through human activities have significantly altered the physical habitat and ecologic...

Quantifying carbon footprint reduction opportunities for U.S. households and communities.

Carbon management is of increasing interest to individuals, households, and communities. In order to effectively assess and manage their climate impacts, individuals need information on the financial and greenhouse gas benefits of effective mitigation opportunities. We use consumption-based life cycle accounting techniques to quantify the carbon footprints of typical U.S. households in 28 citie...

Reducing the carbon footprint of Canadian peat extraction and restoration.

The Canadian horticultural peat industry generates carbon emissions through various methods of peat extraction, processing, and land-use changes. This study provides a carbon emissions analysis comparing the traditional vacuum harvest (VH) and block-cut (BC) extraction techniques to a new acrotelm transplant (AT) method that restores natural peatland function by preserving and replacing the sur...

Socio-ecological complexity and the restoration of river ecosystems

Understanding socio-ecological characteristics associated with rivers and their catchments, and using that understanding to effectively manage and restore river ecosystems, is an increasingly complex challenge. While great strides have been made in the last half century in understanding rivers as ecological systems, human exploitation of river water and riparian zones have frustrated river mana...
